Professional Journey and Experience
Can you briefly describe your career journey and how you arrived at your current position?
I didn’t specifically pursue a career in healthcare, it found me, and it has been a tremendous blessing. Having been born and raised in Hanford, I feel so very privileged to play a role in serving the Central Valley communities that I love so much. I joined Adventist Health here in the Central Valley 18 years ago as a Financial Analyst and was fortunate to have opportunities to develop professionally within an amazing organization, which led me to my current role. What has been your most significant achievement or milestone in your career?
Given that our organization exists to take care of people and play a key role in uplifting communities, I’d say the most meaningful achievements that I’ve had the honor to be part of are those through which we have expanded our services to reach more people. A few of the larger achievements include the construction and opening our new hospital campus in Hanford over a decade ago, partnering with Sierra Kings Health Care District in Reedley to bring the standalone hospital in that community into our Adventist Health family and the monumental accomplishment of partnering with the Tulare Local Health Care District to reopen the shuttered hospital in Tulare in just 110 days. There are obviously many others and the common factor with all of them is that we were able to fill a void for communities in need, which has ultimately allowed us to play an even bigger role in improving and saving lives across Central California. What key challenges have you faced in your professional journey, and how did you overcome them?
A couple key challenges that all healthcare providers across the Valley and state of California wrestle with are the increasingly difficult post-pandemic economic dynamics and better understanding what it means to truly achieve health equity. There are no simple solutions, but it is ultimately our job to figure it out so that every member of every community can access excellent and comprehensive healthcare. For me, the foundational elements in successfully tackling these and other challenges are staying grounded in what our organization has been called to do in serving all people, never underestimating the importance of the role we play in enabling individuals, families & communities to thrive and always making decisions for the right reasons.
Insights and Perspectives
What are the core values and mission of your company?
Our mission and values are beautiful and bold and truly make up the foundation of what we strive to be and accomplish every day. Our mission is Living God’s love by inspiring health, wholeness and hope. Our values are to be love, be a force a good, be a mission owner, be welcoming, be curious and be brilliant. How does your leadership style influence your team and company culture?
My leadership style, and really that of our entire leadership team, is to be as genuine and open as possible while ensuring that everyone on our team always clearly understands how our work impacts the communities that depend on us to be great. My fellow leaders and I put a heavy emphasis on making a difference far beyond the excellent clinical care that our patients should always expect of us. We expect our team to show love and compassion to all we encounter inside or outside of our facilities, and we encourage everyone to be connected to our communities in ways that best suit them and allow them to make a positive difference in the lives of others. What advice would you give to aspiring leaders in your field?
Find your purpose and lead through it. Never lose sight of why it’s important to find your greatness in your role, no matter what specific role that is. Everything you do is connected to a patient, a family, a community that is depending on you, whether you are providing direct patient care or supporting those that do.
Personal Interests and Community Involvement
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
Most of my time and activity revolves around my family. My wife and I have four children, so our interests and hobbies tend to evolve to align with what’s happening in their worlds. Are you involved in any community or charitable organizations? If so, please elaborate.
I am involved in a variety of ways. I’ve served as a board member and coach for multiple youth leagues in different sports for a long-time. Coaching is a source of joy for me because it allows me an opportunity to hopefully be a positive influence for the kids in our community. I’ve served on boards and commissions for different community and government organizations for many years and I contribute time, effort and resources toward a multitude of causes designed to improve lives and strengthen community. And, I am very proud of the opportunity that I have to participate with Adventist Health as we continue cultivating relationships that enable us to contribute to community efforts and make a difference on a much larger scale.
Looking Forward
What are your goals and vision for the future of your company?
My goal for Adventist Health is that we fulfill our mission every day and that we do so by exhibiting our core values at every turn. Through this we will continue to advance care delivery and grow service offerings to provide our community members with expanded access to excellent care closer to home. This vision for our future also calls us to become increasingly interwoven into the fabric of the communities we serve for the purpose of improving lives and contributing substantially to a brighter future for all.How do you stay motivated and inspired in your work?
I am part of an amazing team that is committed to caring for people and they are an incredible source of inspiration for me. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to make a real difference through my work and I understand the impact that our organization can have for individuals and entire communities. I keep this front of mind every day.Is there a particular quote or mantra that guides you?
